Salem Business Legacy: Tyson Pruett
In a world where business and community leadership often intersect, Tyson Pruett stands out for his commitment to both. As the managing partner of Anthem Strategists, a local business consultancy, this leader has made it his mission to foster business growth while simultaneously uplifting his community through thoughtful leadership.
Reflecting on his journey, Pruett emphasizes how intertwined personal and professional experiences can be. “Personal and business life are closely connected,” he explains. “Experiences from growing up, school, business, athletics, and community service all shape the decisions you make in business.” This holistic approach has guided him in not just growing his own ventures, but also in playing an active role in community development.
His transition into leadership was a natural progression, driven by a desire to help others. “There wasn’t a specific moment that sparked my interest in leadership,” Tyson says. “It was a gradual shift from helping other businesses grow to applying the same skills to my own. That involvement led me to take on more community projects and nonprofits.”
One of his most significant current efforts involves the revitalization of “The Forge” in downtown Salem. Previously known as Liberty Plaza, this building had been neglected for years. Now, under his direction, it’s undergoing a transformation. “The Forge is a key project that aims to bring vibrancy back to the downtown area,” he shares. “We’re turning it into a hub that can be a central part of the community’s renewal.”
A key aspect of his leadership has been empowering others, particularly through his company’s paid volunteer time-off initiative. “We encourage our staff to get involved in causes they care about, whether it’s Habitat for Humanity, the Humane Society, or local shelters,” he says. “Giving back to the community is an integral part of our company culture.”
One of the more complex community roles he has taken on was serving on Salem’s budget committee, where balancing limited resources with the city’s needs was a challenge. “It’s always difficult to please everyone, but by carefully considering all the options, you can find a solution that benefits the greater good,” he notes.
Looking ahead, Pruett’s goals are focused on continuing to enrich the community through redevelopment and affordable housing initiatives. “We’re working on projects like tiny homes and shelters to meet the growing need for affordable housing,” he says. “I believe these efforts will have a lasting impact on Salem.”
Despite the challenges of leadership, he remains optimistic. “I keep myself and others uplifted by surrounding myself with good people and focusing on win-win scenarios. I want my legacy to be one where everyone involved benefits,” he says, drawing inspiration from Mike McLaren, a former Salem Chamber leader who emphasized the importance of mutual success.
For those aspiring to leadership, Pruett offers two pieces of advice: “First, surround yourself with people smarter than you. And second, find work that aligns with your passion. When you’re passionate about what you do, even the tough days feel fulfilling.”
As he continues to lead, Pruett remains focused on creating lasting, positive change for both his company and the city he calls home.
