In the heart of Salem, Oregon, Indigo Wellness Center stands as a beacon of health and community connection, led by its founder, Dr. Zohra Campbell. A chiropractor, yoga therapist, and visionary, Campbell reflects on her two decades of leadership and the impact her journey has made on the Salem community.

“My personal history and experiences shaped Indigo’s mission,” Campbell says. Her mother’s yoga practice, witnessed daily as a child, left an indelible mark. Later, a car accident at 19 introduced her to chiropractic care and yoga as powerful tools for healing. While studying Anatomy and Biomechanics at Western States Chiropractic College, she worked as a massage therapist and practiced yoga, which fueled her passion for combining physical and therapeutic practices. “This fueled my desire to create Indigo—to bring these things together.”

Founded in 2004, Indigo Wellness Center began as a single-room office. Over the years, it has grown into a multifaceted wellness center offering chiropractic care, yoga therapy, and massage services. “Each business under Indigo’s umbrella has distinct needs and challenges,” Campbell explains. “Navigating these while maintaining our mission is why we celebrate 20 years of service in Salem.”

Campbell attributes much of her success to her community connections and early leadership experiences. Networking with groups like Women in Networking and the Salem Chamber of Commerce helped her develop public speaking skills and refine her mission. But one moment stands out: volunteering at Ground Zero after 9/11. “Providing chiropractic care to first responders and delivering a check donation from the Salem Chamber to the Manhattan Chamber was a powerful reminder of what we can achieve together in business and community,” she recalls.

Running three interconnected businesses came with its challenges. “I was the lead chiropractor and taught five yoga classes a week,” Campbell says. She credits the book E-Myth and classes at the Chemeketa Center for Business and Industry for teaching her how to create systems that allowed her to focus on working smarter, not harder. “With clear systems in place, everyone knows their role in fulfilling our goals.”

Indigo Wellness Center has become a transformative force in Salem, not only as a wellness hub but also as a space for personal growth and community empowerment. Campbell is particularly proud of the 200-hour yoga teacher training program she launched in 2017. “To date, we’ve graduated more than 100 students”. “Many are teaching yoga in studios, gyms, and senior centers, while others integrate mindfulness and breathwork into their counseling and teaching roles.”

Her leadership philosophy is rooted in empathy and adaptability. “A business is a community of people who rely on each other,” she says. “As a leader, you have to be humble, prepared to pivot, and willing to seek advice from mentors and learn from others.”

Campbell envisions continued growth for Indigo as a therapeutic wellness spa, with a focus on scoliosis and pain management through yoga, rehabilitation, and breathwork. She also emphasizes the importance of resilience and personal wellness in leadership. “Doing the personal work—hydration, rest, exercise—is essential to bring your best to every interaction.”

Campbell’s advice for aspiring leaders is simple yet profound: “Stay true to your dream and mission; let that guide every decision. Treat people fairly and honestly.”

As Indigo Wellness Center marks 20 years of service, Campbell’s legacy is one of unwavering dedication to wellness and community. “When we come together in community and in business,” she says, “we can accomplish a lot.”
