Looking back at his professional background and milestones, it’s fair to say that Matthews’ professional journey is rooted in a strong educational foundation, holding a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Western University and an MBA. His career trajectory includes diverse roles that have significantly shaped his outlook and expertise. One of his pivotal experiences was serving on a citizen review board through the justice department. Reflecting on this role, he shared that they evaluated DHS cases to identify gaps in how the state agency cared for children. “This experience was impactful and influenced my perspective on justice and societal issues”, he said.
His tenure in the community benefit department at the state health department further honed his skills in needs assessment and fund management. These roles, coupled with his extensive experience as a realtor and business owner, have equipped Matthews with a unique perspective on business management and community service.
Talking about significant accomplishments and challenges, one of Matthews’ most rewarding projects was his work with the citizen review board, which allowed him to “see a different side of society and play a part in protecting children and advocating for justice” he noted.
Matthews’ journey has not been without challenges. Growing up in an environment where education was not prioritized, he faced significant obstacles. He barely graduated high school, and many thought he would end up living in his mom’s basement or in jail. However, with the mentorship of a dedicated individual from the Marion County DA’s office, he turned his life around, igniting his passion for education and setting him on a path to success.
When asked about key qualities and advice for young professionals, Matthews attributed much of his success to his ability to empathize and connect with people from various backgrounds. Coming from a diverse background, he’s lived many different lives in the community. “This ability to understand and relate to people from different walks of life has been a significant factor in my success” he said. For young professionals aspiring to achieve similar success, he emphasizes the importance of self-motivation and honesty. “No one will care more about your success than you do. You have to be the one to make it happen,” he advised.
Balancing professional and personal life is another area where Matthews excels. He prioritizes family events and maintains a detailed schedule to ensure he meets both his professional obligations and family commitments. “There isn’t any amount of money or success that justifies missing important moments with my kids”, he stated.
