Derek Gilbert’s journey from the small-town charm of Corvallis, Oregon, to becoming a leader in both his industry and community is marked by resilience, adaptability, and an unyielding commitment to making a difference.

Gilbert, a proud graduate of Corvallis High School and Linfield College, launched his professional life managing operations at Jeld-Wen Windows and Doors. However, his career path took an unexpected turn in 2008 when layoffs prompted a pivot to his passion for firefighting. “Stayton Fire was amazing,” Gilbert recalls, reflecting on his time as a recruitment and retention officer and volunteer firefighter. Despite his passion, a previous mountain biking accident that left him with fused vertebrae presented a barrier to advancing in paid fire service roles.

This setback, however, became a stepping stone. Encouraged by a family friend, Gilbert transitioned into financial advising, a field where he discovered a new passion for helping others achieve their goals. In February of this year, he took a significant leap by founding Anthem Wealth Strategies, a firm dedicated to providing comprehensive financial guidance in collaboration with Anthem Strategists. “Starting my own business was a major accomplishment and something I’ve dreamed about for a long time,” he says.

Gilbert’s approach to his career reflects lessons learned from his mentors and personal values instilled by his parents. “My parents taught me about work ethic, that your word and handshake mean something, and to contribute back to the community you live and work in,” he shares. Today, he pays that ethos forward by mentoring younger professionals and actively participating in nonprofit initiatives, including the successful revival of Salem’s holiday lights parade. “We were thrilled that it brought so many people downtown as a great way to kick off the holiday season and hopefully drive more business downtown.”

Challenges have been central to Gilbert’s growth. He describes his career transitions and interpersonal learning experiences as opportunities to evolve. “I am a huge believer in the broken road and learning from adversity,” he notes. This perspective has helped him develop the relational approach that defines his work today. “Investing in relationships and the community has helped my success and continues to drive both personal and business growth,” he says.

Gilbert’s commitment to staying at the forefront of his industry is fueled by continuing education and collaboration. He leverages resources from Ameriprise, connects with peers across industries, and participates in local business organizations like the Salem Chamber of Commerce to remain informed. “I enjoy collaborating with people from other industries through nonprofit work and professional groups to understand broader economic trends and how they affect my clients,” Gilbert explains.

Balancing his professional aspirations with family life is a priority. Gilbert describes his wife Renee and their two sons as his anchors, sharing their love for outdoor activities and sports. He also finds fulfillment in his role as a volunteer firefighter with Marion County Fire District #1, where he serves as a lieutenant. “Being able to help people in that capacity is still a huge passion for me,” he says.

Looking ahead, Gilbert envisions both growth and mentorship as central to his goals. His immediate plans include expanding his team and geographic reach to serve clients more effectively. Long-term, he aims to leave a lasting impact by training new advisors and encouraging them to embrace a community-focused approach. “By incorporating a community focus in mentoring, I hope to foster both personal success and a broader positive impact,” Gilbert says.

Gilbert offers straightforward advice for young professionals aspiring to success: “Place the interests of those you serve above your own. Be genuine, direct, and honest. Trust is paramount and something that is earned.” With his blend of determination, community spirit, and vision, Derek Gilbert exemplifies the qualities of a true rising star.
