Senior Financial Advisor and Partner Ryan Skogstad Shaping Salem’s Financial Landscape
Reflecting on his journey, Skogstad credits his rise in part to a steadfast commitment to his principles and community. “I feel what has helped me be most successful is simply the consistency and drive to excel. It hasn’t always been easy. But I haven’t waivered on my commitment to grow in my work life, but also contribute to the areas in the community where I feel passionate,” Skogstad shared in a recent interview.
His entry into the financial sector was marked by a desire to engage fully with all aspects of his community. “I remember when entering this career, I wanted to be involved with all aspects of the community. I joined multiple clubs, boards, coached youth sports, etc. As my responsibilities have grown, this has become more difficult. But I continue to try and be a resource and assist in areas I am able,” he recalled.
The growth of Capstone is attributed to its unique business model, which appeals to advisors who prefer an independent and transparent approach. Skogstad describes Capstone’s structure as a significant advantage. “I think Capstone has grown because it’s a very attractive platform for advisors to run a clean business and serve their clients, without a lot of extra cost on the advisor or the client,” he said.
His colleague, Rob Norton, also highlights the operational efficiencies that have contributed to Capstone’s success. “The old school method is really getting stripped away with the efficiency of technology. We can do a lot more with less and pass the cost savings onto other advisors and clients,” Norton added.
Skogstad’s personal approach to investing and client relations focuses on removing the emotional biases that often cloud financial decisions. “Most people make investment decisions based on emotions or what they’ve heard, while most institutions establish an investment policy and manage through the policy with a disciplined, process-driven approach. Each advisor at Capstone is able to establish their own niche, but what we try to do is bring that institutional process to the individual,” he explained.
A significant challenge in his career came during the financial crisis of 2008, when he worked for a national brokerage that changed its business model overnight. “This was an exciting but bold step. But, that step outside of my comfort zone has allowed for significant opportunities,” Skogstad remarked on moving to establish Capstone shortly thereafter with Norton.
His commitment to Salem extends beyond professional boundaries. For about fifteen years, Skogstad has coached youth sports, a role that he finds particularly fulfilling. “I have thoroughly enjoyed my involvement and learned just as much from them as they did from me,” he reflected.
As Capstone continues to grow, Skogstad remains focused on nurturing a culture of resilience and optimism. “I tend to have an optimistic attitude and want to be someone who perseveres through challenges. As an owner and manager of employees, I continue to hope that my leadership will inspire them as well, to overcome obstacles and provide the type of culture that they want to be a part of,” he concluded.
Ryan Skogstad’s leadership at Capstone Wealth Advisors not only underscores his professional expertise but also highlights his deep commitment to enriching the Salem community through both his financial acumen and civic involvement.
