The Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) is celebrating the 15th anniversary of its Energy Smart Industrial (ESI) program, a pioneering initiative that has transformed energy efficiency in the industrial sector across the Pacific Northwest. Over the past decade and a half, the program has not only helped businesses grow and compete but has also been integral in meeting the region’s ambitious energy conservation targets.

“The ESI program has transformed how industries view and manage their energy consumption,” said Jamae Hilliard Creecy, BPA’s Vice President of Energy Efficiency. “Over the past 15 years, BPA has helped utilities build strong, long-term relationships with their key industrial-end users, paving the way for sustained energy savings and operational improvements, with facilities receiving several other non-energy benefits.”

The program’s impact has been substantial. Since its inception, the ESI program has completed more than 7,000 projects focused on industrial processes, systems, and device-level measures. These efforts have resulted in over 240 average megawatts in first-year energy savings, an amount sufficient to power 175,000 homes across the Northwest.

BPA’s Energy Smart Industrial program is particularly vital as the Pacific Northwest transitions away from coal-based energy generation. The region plans to retire over 2,000 average megawatts of coal generation in the coming years while integrating a diverse mix of renewable energy resources.

“BPA’s commitment to industrial energy efficiency remains unwavering,” Creecy added. “By leveraging the expertise and collaboration of utilities, industries, and regional stakeholders, the ESI program is set to lead the region in achieving greater energy savings, implementing energy management practices, and supporting energy-related climate and national decarbonization goals.”

The ESI program works by partnering with utilities and industries to deliver tailored energy solutions. Its focus on energy management practices has proven successful in driving significant operational improvements while providing long-term benefits that extend beyond energy savings.

As BPA looks ahead, the organization is committed to expanding the program’s reach and influence. By strengthening collaborations and maintaining its focus on innovative energy practices, the ESI program aims to support regional energy goals while bolstering industrial growth and competitiveness.

With its proven track record and dedication to innovation, the Energy Smart Industrial program stands as a testament to BPA’s leadership in energy efficiency. It highlights the power of partnerships and collaboration in addressing the challenges of energy conservation and decarbonization.

“Through the ESI program, BPA has shown that energy efficiency is not just about saving power—it’s about strengthening communities, supporting businesses, and building a sustainable future for the Pacific Northwest,” Creecy said.

As the region navigates its evolving energy landscape, the ESI program’s success serves as a model for industrial energy efficiency and a beacon of hope for achieving sustainable energy goals.
